Elmer and Mildred Hjortland Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Elmer and Mildred Hjortland Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 1995 by the daughter and son-in-law of Elmer and Mildred, Mrs. Elaine and the Rev. Jennings Feroe. Elmer received his Certificate of Theology from Luther Seminary in 1924 and served as an army chaplain as well as a parish pastor in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, California, and Arizona. He especially enjoyed athletics, as well as public speaking, particularly at high school graduations. Mildred was a homemaker who entered joyfully into the life of every congregation that Elmer served, and especially enjoyed entertaining, cooking, needlepoint, and singing; she traveled to Europe with the choirs she joined, and also frequently performed solos. This fund was established to honor the lives and memories of Elmer and Mildred Hjortland, and in appreciation for the seminary training that Elmer received. This fund provides important financial support for deserving students preparing for a full-time church vocation.
