Philip T. and Myrtle E. Johnson Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Philip T. and Myrtle E. Johnson Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in August, 2002, by the estate of Philip Johnson. Philip and Myrtle were active lay leaders for most of their lives at their congregation, Emanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in northeast Minneapolis. In May, 2007, that congregation became part of the Northeast Community Lutheran Church, located in the same building. Philip and Myrtle were active in the church choir, on the church council, and on various committees at their congregation. They adopted two daughters through Lutheran Social Service. Philip was a successful real estate and insurance agent, working in a firm with his brothers. Myrtle also worked for their firm as a secretary. They both enjoyed traveling in the United States and abroad. Myrtle died in February, 1978; Philip, who was born in December, 1898, had the rare distinction of living not only in two millennia, but also in three centuries. He died in September, 2001. This fund was established as a celebration of the love that Philip and Myrtle shared for the Lutheran church during their lives, and provides important support for financially deserving Lutheran students enrolled in any degree program.
