Hazel M. Johnson Endowed Student Aid Scholarship Fund

The Hazel M. Johnson Endowed Scholarship Fund was established with an insurance policy at the time of Hazel’s death on September 6, 2010. She was born September 6, 1919. Her background in higher education and lifelong involvement in the Lutheran church motivated Hazel to make this donation. She was a 1941 graduate of Swedish Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis. She then served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942-45. She received a Masters of Education degree in 1960, and a Ph.D. in 1969, both from the University of Minnesota. She was an instructor at Swedish and Abbott Schools of Nursing, and later was chair of the Gustavus Adolphus College nursing department from 1969-1981. Her life centered on serving God with special interest in mission work in the Third World. She was a longtime member of Mount Carmel Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. Scholarships from the fund she established will be awarded annually to deserving second-year and third-year students at Luther Seminary.
