Don Hillan Family Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Don Hillan Family Endowed Scholarship Fund was established on April 19, 2002, by Don Hillan. Don grew up on his family’s farm near Colman, S.D., and earned his doctorate in medicine in 1949. During the Korean War, he served as a surgeon in the Navy at a M.A.S.H. hospital in Korea, and upon returning home, worked as a pediatrician in South Dakota and Wisconsin. He was an active lay leader in his congregation, St. Peter Lutheran Church in Madison, S.D., and also actively supported St. Dysmas Prison Ministries. The fund was established to give thanks to God as an expression of stewardship and to help Luther Seminary students prepare to extend and share the good news of Jesus Christ during their lives of service to the church. This fund provides important support for financially deserving students enrolled in any degree program with first preference for members of Colman Lutheran Church in Colman, S.D., and second preference for students from South Dakota.
