Jerome and Winifred Formo Endowed Scholarship Fund
The Jerome and Winifred Formo Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by their son Philip Formo in June 2009 in memory of his parents. Jerry Formo was born August 24, 1915, and died April 9, 2009. Winifred Formo was born May 13, 1916, and died April 9, 2003. They both were deeply devoted to Jesus Christ, to the Lutheran church, to Luther Seminary, and to other institutions of the church. They were active volunteers with the Global Mission Institute, and saw Luther Seminary as an important place for calling, educating, and sending forth strong, compassionate, biblically-based leaders for Christian communities throughout the United States and around the world. They had strong family ties to Luther Seminary. Winifred’s brother Melvin Helland taught at Augsburg Seminary and later at Luther Seminary. Their son Philip received his Master of Divinity degree from Luther Seminary in 1980. Jerry and Winifred grew up in the Lutheran Free Church, with a strong focus on mission globally and locally. Jerry taught school for four years and later became a chemical engineer. He invented a compound for dinnerware that can be used in both microwave ovens and standard ovens. He led the plastics laboratory at Honeywell, and later was in charge of product development at Plastics, Inc. in St. Paul. Winifred was a nurse who spent many years as a loving homemaker. They were devoted members of Roseville Lutheran Church in Roseville, Minnesota, from 1969 until the end of their lives. Scholarships from the Jerome and Winifred Formo Endowed Scholarship Fund will go to financially deserving students at Luther Seminary who are preparing to serve the ELCA as rostered leaders.
