Donald and Grace Flaten Current Scholarship Fund

The Rev. Donald and Grace Flaten Current Scholarship Fund at Luther Seminary was established in 2014 by Rev. Mark and Linda Nygard whose lives were touched by the Flatens. Donald and Grace were long-term missionaries for the ELC, the ALC, and the ELCA from 1956 to 1999, serving primarily in Cameroon and Nigeria in West Africa. They were involved in medical work, building schools, churches and dispensaries, overseeing agricultural projects, teaching adult literacy, instructing pastors and catechists in Bible school, and generating written materials in multiple languages for churches. The most riveting for Don and Grace was the opportunity to share the Gospel among the often-nomadic Fulani people. After being forced to retire for health reasons, Don and Grace went back to Cameroon as volunteers at their own expense to continue the work they had helped establish years before. This scholarship provides important support for students at Luther Seminary interested in global mission; or any deserving student.
