Nels Kenneth and Doris Mae Nelson Endowed Scholarship Fund
The Nels Kenneth and Doris Mae Nelson Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in June, 2006, by Doris Mae Nelson. Nels and Doris were active lay leaders in their congregation, Atonement Lutheran Church in Bloomington, Minn., and recognized Luther Seminary as an important training ground for future church leaders. Nels was the son of immigrants from Vasterbotten county in Sweden, and was active with the American Swedish Institute throughout his life. He served during WWII on the USS Ommaney Bay CVE 79, and after the war worked as a postal clerk for the Minneapolis post office. Doris established this fund to honor the memory of her husband, Nels, who died in July, 2004, at the age of 81. This fund provides important support for financially deserving students enrolled in any degree program, with preference for members of Atonement Lutheran Church in Bloomington, Minn.
