Franz and Edith Tiede Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Franz and Edith Tiede Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in August, 1975, by Dr. John and Vivian Tiede to honor the memory of John’s parents, the Rev. Franz and Edith Tiede. Franz was a Lutheran pastor, like his father and grandfather before him. John was a dentist who was an active lay leader in his congregation, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Le Center, Minn., the congregation where his father baptized and confirmed him. He understood the meaning of Christian vocation, and together with his wife and about 30 other Minnesota dentists, spent time as a volunteer in Madagascar during the 1960s, ‘70s, and early ’80s, helping to establish and staff a dental clinic through a program called H.E.L.P. (Health Education Layman’s Project). John and Vivian’s youngest son, David, graduated from Luther Theological Seminary in 1966 and returned to Luther as a member of the New Testament faculty in 1971. He served as the president of Luther Seminary from 1987 until his retirement in 2005. This fund provides important financial support for deserving students enrolled in any degree program.
