David Huglen Strommen Endowed Scholarship Fund

The David Huglen Strommen Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in July, 2003, by David’s parents, the Rev. Merton and Mrs. Irene Strommen. Merton is a 1944 graduate of Augsburg Seminary, a predecessor of Luther Seminary. He served as a parish pastor in Mora, Minn., before becoming the campus pastor at Augsburg College. He served for thirty years as the National Youth Director for the Lutheran Free Church, and he founded the Search Institute, a nationally-recognized research organization. David was deeply committed to his faith and working with youth, and entered Luther Northwestern Theological Seminary in 1985 with the intention of becoming a youth minister. He was killed in the summer of 1986 when struck by lightning while leading a youth outing in the Rocky Mountains. This fund was established to honor his memory and his ministry, and provides important support for financially deserving students or to attract excellent candidates with the qualities to be superior and faithful leaders, who are enrolled in the Children, Youth and Family Ministry degree program.
