Fredrik A. Schiotz Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Fredrik A. Schiotz Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in March, 1990, by Fred’s wife, Dagny, and by his friends, family and colleagues to honor his memory and his ministry. Fred graduated from Luther Theological Seminary in 1930, after having interrupted his seminary studies to serve as the traveling secretary of the Student Volunteer Movement for Foreign Missions, an interdenominational group. After his ordination, he served as a parish pastor in Duluth, Minn., Moorhead, Minn., and New York City. In 1947, he helped to establish the Lutheran World Federation, and beginning in 1948 he served as the National Lutheran Council’s executive secretary for the Commission for Younger Churches and Orphaned Missions. He was elected president of the ELC in 1954 and led that body to join the World Council of Churches. After the ELC merged with two other Lutheran denominations to form the ALC in 1960, Fred was elected its first president. From 1963 until 1970, he served as president of the Lutheran World Federation. He was an active supporter of the civil rights movements, and in his retirement taught classes on ecumenical issues at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., California Lutheran College in Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. He died in February, 1989, at the age of 87. This fund provides important financial support for deserving students with an interest in global missions, particularly, international students from Third World countries studying at the seminary, or American students studying abroad in those countries.
