Sheldon Tostengard Endowed Preaching Scholarship Fund

The Sheldon A. Tostengard Endowed Preaching Scholarship was established in August, 2001, by friends and family of the Rev. Sheldon and Dorothy Tostengard, to honor the influence of Sheldon on the preaching style and content of many of his former students. Sheldon is a 1961 graduate of Luther Theological Seminary who served as a parish pastor in Hartford, S.D., and Jamestown, N.D., and taught religion at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., before joining the seminary’s faculty in 1977. Sheldon taught homiletics at the seminary until his retirement in 1996, and has written two books, The Spoken Word (1989) and Who Is Jesus: Basic Questions (1999). Since its establishment, Sheldon and Dorothy have contributed significant gifts to this fund as well. This fund provides important financial support for a deserving M.Div. student selected by the homiletics faculty at the end of the student’s middler year, who shows promise as a helpful biblical preacher. This student is strongly encouraged to preach at a chapel service in his or her senior year.
