Martin and Gloria Lehmann Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Rev. Dr. Martin E. and Gloria J. Lehmann Endowed Scholarship Fund at Luther Seminary was created by Gloria in celebration of the faithful witness provided through her family and congregations over the years and to share her faith and love of the church with coming generations. Martin served parishes in three states; Michigan, Illinois, and Iowa. He was Professor of Church History in Fremont, Nebraska and then for eighteen years at Luther Northwestern Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he also served as Dean of Students for a number of years. After retiring, he continually served God though interims and as a supply pastor. His devotion and biblical knowledge led him to author three books and he was the translator and editor of Volume 38 of the American edition of “Luther’s Works”. He spent a sabbatical at the University of Erlangen in Germany and traveled around the world from 1974-1975, visiting Luther Seminaries, the Holy Land, historical sites and doing research on a German missionary in Sumatra of Indonesia. Martin enjoyed keeping in touch with his family and friends, colleagues, former students and parishioners and loved spending his time devoting his life to Jesus Christ. ;Martin met Gloria when she was a member of his parish in Iowa. After the death of his wife, Louise, in 1972, God guided their paths together once again. They were married in 1974. Gloria left her twenty year teaching career and accompanied him on sabbatical and for ten years at the seminary. After Martin retired they moved to a home built for them in rural Sperry, Iowa. They spent many happy years there until his death in 2011 at age 96. Martin had served 71 years in ministry. This scholarship provides important support for deserving Luther Seminary student preparing for rural ministry or student from rural or small town.
