The Chaplain Joseph L.F. Huseth Endowed Scholarship Fund at Luther Seminary
The Chaplain Joseph L.F. Huseth Endowed Scholarship Fund is established in memory of Chaplain (Col) Joseph Huseth, and also in honor of two of his grandchildren, Pastors Eric Huseth and Kirsten Sauey Hofmann. All three accepted the call by the Holy Spirit to ordained ministry in the Lutheran Church to witness to salvation through Jesus Christ and serve in God’s world. Rev. Joseph Huseth was a second-generation graduate of Luther Theological Seminary in 1954. His father, Rev. Halvor Huseth, graduated from Luther Seminary in 1917. Joseph is also the grandnephew of Marcus 0. Bockman who served as the president of Luther Seminary from 1917 to 1930. Joseph’s brother, Rev. David Huseth graduated in 1959 and his two brothers-inlaw, Rev. George Larson and Rev. Paul Sather, graduated in 1944.
The Holy Spirit called Joseph to ministry from a fox hole during the Korean War where he was wounded twice and received the Silver Star, the third highest commendation for bravery in combat. Following ordination, he went on to serve Lutheran congregations in South Dakota, Colorado, and California before returning to the US Army as Chaplain where he served military personnel and their families in California, Vietnam, Missouri, Germany, Korea, and Arizona until his retirement at the rank of Colonel in 1983. This scholarship is dedicated to all those who have accepted God’s calling and provides support for educating pastors and lay leaders for Christian communities for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
